The Best Beaches in Mykonos: Which Are Calm and Which Are Loud

Mykonos has a reputation problem where beaches are concerned. People arrive expecting either an unbroken party or a betrayal of the Greek islands, and the island is neither. It has roughly thirty beaches, and they differ from one another far more than the guidebook photographs suggest.

The useful way to think about them is not by ranking but by two questions: how loud is it, and which way does it face?

The geography that decides everything

Mykonos is split by its own topography. The south coast is sheltered by hills from the north wind, so it holds the sand, the calm water and, consequently, almost all of the developed beaches, the beach clubs and the crowds.

The north and west are more exposed and much less built up. Fewer sunbeds, fewer people, more wind.

This matters day to day because of the Meltemi, the dry north wind that blows through high summer and is at its most insistent in July and August. When it is up, the north coast becomes a windsurfing proposition rather than a sunbathing one, and everybody moves south. When it is calm, the north is the better half of the island.

The practical version: check the wind before you decide where to spend the day, not the night before.

The loud beaches

These are not a criticism. They are simply what they are, and they are very good at it.

Paradise

The original, and still the loudest. Young, busy, music from the afternoon onwards, and a scene that runs late. Come for the day if you want it. Do not book a room overlooking it if you do not.

Super Paradise

Around the headland, more intense again, and with a long-standing LGBTQ+ following. Same principle as Paradise, turned up.

Paraga

The polished end of the party coast. Day clubs with proper kitchens and a soundtrack that starts at lunch. It draws a slightly older crowd than Paradise and takes itself more seriously.

Psarou

Small, sheltered, exceptionally pretty, and the island’s most conspicuous address, with yachts anchored offshore and Nammos on the sand. Beautiful water. Not remotely quiet in August, and not cheap.

The middle ground

Beaches that are organised and busy but not built around music.

Platis Gialos

A long, orderly beach lined with hotels and restaurants, with the best bus connections on the island and the jetty where the beach boats leave from. Efficient rather than romantic, but genuinely convenient, and the swimming is calm.

Ornos

A proper village bay with shallow, soft-sand swimming and tavernas along the front. The most family-friendly of the south coast beaches and a reliable choice when you want to do very little.

Elia and Kalo Livadi

Two of the longest beaches on the island, on the south-east coast. Organised at the centre, considerably emptier at the ends. Elia is reachable by beach boat in summer; both are best with a car.

Agios Stefanos

On the west coast above the New Port, a sheltered curve of sand with gradually deepening water, a few tavernas behind it and a view across to Tinos. It is organised but has no music, and the shallow entry makes it one of the better beaches for young children. Because it faces west, it also gets the sunset — which is why this stretch of coast quietly works so well as a base.

The quiet beaches

The reason to hire a car.

Agios Sostis

On the north coast, and one of the most unspoilt beaches left on Mykonos. There are no sunbeds and no umbrellas — you bring your own shade or you accept the sun. Clear, cold-ish water and a rocky walk down. Exposed when the Meltemi is blowing.

Fokos

Further round the north-east coast, reached by an unsurfaced road that puts off most visitors. Wild, empty and almost entirely undeveloped. Check before you go whether anything is open to eat, and carry water either way.

Kapari

A small unorganised cove on the west side, near Agios Ioannis, looking towards Delos. No facilities at all. Popular with people who know it, particularly at sunset.

Panormos and Ftelia

The two big north-coast bays. Broad, handsome and considerably less developed than the south. Ftelia is the island’s windsurfing beach for a reason: when the Meltemi is up, these are for watching, not swimming.

Lia

At the far south-eastern end of the island, past Kalafatis. Organised but small, with notably clear water and the feeling of being some distance from everything, which it is.

How to plan a week of beaches

Do not try to see all of them. Four or five is a full week, particularly if you also want to spend a morning on the archaeological site at Delos.

A sensible pattern:

  • One organised south-coast day — Platis Gialos, Ornos or Elia. Easy, comfortable, no logistics.
  • One loud day, if you want one. Paraga or Paradise, and treat it as an outing rather than a beach day.
  • One wild day — Agios Sostis or Fokos, with a hire car, a hat and lunch booked or improvised.
  • One doing-nothing day close to where you are staying.

That last one is worth defending. Mykonos rewards people who are not commuting across it every morning. Being able to swim, eat and return to shade without getting in a car is the difference between a holiday and an itinerary — one argument for basing yourself somewhere with its own water, like the suites at Bard de Sol above the bay at Agios Stefanos, where a private plunge pool covers the hours when the beach is least appealing.

Practical notes

Sunbeds on the organised beaches are rented, and on the more fashionable ones they are booked in advance during high season. Prices vary widely and change from year to year, so check directly rather than relying on anything written online.

The unorganised beaches have no shade, no water and often no road surface worth the name. Bring more water than you think you need.

Buses serve the main southern beaches well in summer and the outlying ones barely at all. If your list includes Fokos, Kapari or Agios Sostis, you will need your own transport.

And if you have a choice of dates, the beaches are at their best in the shoulder months, when the sea is warm, the wind has settled, and the sand is not being negotiated over.
